“I promise that on this day, I will keep my gadgets away, learn to run, jump, and sway, and just play, play, play!” A lot of children swore to that pledge last October 14, 2017 during Nickelodeon’s celebration of the Worldwide Day of Play in the Filinvest Tent in Alabang. Staying true to their promise of dedicating an entire day to playing (not on their iPads but in play zones and areas!), the kids turned up to get active and went around the venue, full of energy waiting to be unleashed.
They went out and took on the obstacle courses to test their strength and endurance, uncovering their inner ninja skills and showing off their talents in archery - Katniss Everdeen should watch out because these kids are great!
Who said play can’t be educational? These children had fun multi-tasking and getting both their mind and body at work as they bounced around on the trampoline and reached for the letters they needed to complete the words they were given!
Let’s not forget about the inflatables, the Ninja Turtles weapon hunt, and playing basketball and volleyball- a lot of kids definitely had fun here!
Some kids were lucky to have their picture taken with basketball pro Jason Perkins.
Not only did these kids get to work their muscles out and have loads of fun, but they also got to bond with other children and their parents who were supportive enough and encouraged them to experience play just like the old times (aka outside the virtual world!). Traditional games like hopscotch and patintero had their own stations, letting the children develop some more love to games that were part of mostly everyone’s childhood!
Nickelodeon even prepared a life-sized board game - definitely an adventure for our youngsters here!
Not only our bodies needs exercise, we need to train our brains too! Makerspace Manila offered science related activities for the kids.
Children - and parents too! - who wanted to rest from all the physical activities for a while were given space to just sit down and enjoy their favourite Nickelodeon shows playing out in the big screen. ICYDK, Nickelodeon went off-air for three hours from 1pm to 4pm that day to further encourage everyone to get up, get out there, and get active!
Meanwhile in the lobby, visitors could regain their energy with food and refreshments. These young entrepreneurs were happy to help out thirsty costumers with their refreshing iced tea.
Nickelodeon works together with Sinagtala, a non-profit organization that helps Internally Displaced Children (IDPs) and Women in Crisis due to conflict or big natural disasters in the Philippines. Sinagtala's aim is to set up toy libraries in Marawi to help children in psycho-social therapy sessions. Nickelodeon invited their special young guests to join their Worldwide Day of Play. These children left their homes in Marawi, to accompany their parents - our soldiers - in need for treatment for their injuries sustained in the conflict.
